As I once said – winter comes with glitter and pearls. Well, this year it’s collars as well. The air has only started to get crispier and I have already started making my Christmas presents.. For once I wish I could avoid the panic and also enjoy the time prior to Christmas Eve.
As I’m afraid of one of the recipients stumbling upon this blog, I’ll just give you a sneak peak and share the original pictures of these gifts afterwards.

Gobeläänseelik/The tapestry skirt

IMG_4969 1

Pikalt olen otsinud ilusat gobeläänkangast, kuid poodi minnes olen pidanud pettuma.

I’ve been longing for a beautiful tapestry fabric and I finally got my hands on one. Many times I’ve found good looking tapestry fabrics online but  been disappointed seeing them in person.. well, this one looks even better in real life! To let the fabric shine I decided to make a very simple skirt and ended up with a pencil skirt for a change. I was my first time sewing the visible zipper on top of the fabric like this. It was quite difficult to make something so simple for a change (not that sewing an invisible zipper is hard but the technology is different).
More pictures of the blouse here.

Autumn on my sewing plate

Although we’ve already had hail, autumn is still on my sewing plate. I have surprised myself as I’m not a big fan of red but it seems this year is a bit different.. only the gold tones are here as usual.

Bowed

pluus 1

A blouse with a bow is what I’ve wanted for a long time but hadn’t find quite the right one, some were too big, others short.. I sewed this blouse early this spring, a time when I was fascinated by the combination of gold and black. Knowing my self – the time will come soon again.
If I had buttons for previous blouse before I had the idea, then this time buttons turned out to be a big problem.. I just couldn’t find the right ones! All the options I found made the blouse look cheap or grabbed too much attention. As I was looking through my pearls  I found some leftover ones from the cardigan project. I sewed them instead of buttons and on the other side I sewed snaps. I was really happy with the solution because I didn’t have to mess with making buttonholes into this already delicate fabric.
To make the blouse wider it has some pleats on the shoulder line and the armholes are also deepened a bit.

Golden leaves

IMG_4519 2

IMG_4522 2

IMG_4634

I sewed this skirt a bit before spring but it feel more like autumn, so I put on my cardigan and went to the beach. Everyone have returned to their autumn business – jamming, harvesting or buying schoolbooks. I tipped my toes in the sand and photographed these golden leaves. Incidentally I ended up with a few rosehips to put in the jar myself, for autumns sake.

With the anticipation of spring also grows my appetite for floral fabrics and everything else blooming. This year the anticipation grew so big that my graduation dress became head-to-toe floral. And now that some days have the face of autumn and graduation seems like a dream, I feel it’s about time to post these pictures here.
As I was a little hesitated when I had cut out the dress and had my first fitting (it all seemed so flowery) but I’d have to say I was encouraged by Erdem’s 2013 collection.

Curious cats

I’m testing some different prints on fabric and my head is bursting with ideas!
I guess this is what happens (for some people) when you sew – you want to be able to do more than just pick the fabric from the store. The first thing I wanted to try out were cats, my favorite. And the fact that they don’t look all the same gives them each an attitude (like the fat legged one wondering around somewhere on the shirt).

kassid 1

Pildistamise ajal oli õuest kosta mingi suuremat sorti kassi kaklus. Näe, seal ongi üks tagurpidine!

Weirdly enough, there was a mayor cat-fight outside when I took these shots. Oh, and look, there’s one backwards!

To the max

IMG_3986 1

IMG_3989 1

Küllaltki paadunud püksikandjana (olen endale küll lubanud, et panen selga seeliku/kleidi, kuid vahetan selle siiski viimasel minutil turvalisuse huvides pükste vastu) olen avastanud ideaalse aseaine – maani seeliku.
Mõned nädalavahetused tagasi käisin Haapsalus ja väljakutsena ei võtnud ühtegi püksipaari kaasa, mistõttu veetsin suurema osa neist puhkepäevadest just selles roosas seelikus ringi lehvides. Seelik valmis nii mööda minnes ühel suvisel õhtupoolikul.
Eneselegi suureks üllatuseks sain allääre esimese hooga paika.

Often have I promised myself to wear a dress/skirt for an event but changed my mind at the last minute and worn pants instead (some weird safety reason). So as a pant-lover I’ve discovered a perfect substitute for these comfortable garments – a maxi skirt!
A few weekends ago I went to Haapsalu and as a challenge took only skirts and dresses with me. The beginning was hard but most of the weekend I floated around this beautiful town in the pink maxi skirt I made one sunny afernoon.
And I was so surprised I managed to get the hem right with the first try.

A little dress for sewing

kleit 9

kleit 6

To support my sewing hobby while I’m looking for clients and to save money for some new sewing machines, I started working in a thrift store (which sometimes makes me wonder why make clothes when you can get them so cheap?).
To get into the habit of sewing after work and not feeling drained, I started off with something very simple -  a dress for sewing (so I can slip into the magical sewing mode easier).
My patience was really tested with this dress. When I had sewed the rubber band to the waistline and tried it on, it didn’t feel quite right and I decided to move the waistline. But removing the elastic band turned out to be really time consuming (I could’ve sewed several of these dresses in this time).

Flying scissors

IMG_4026 1

IMG_4027 1

Et hoida need lendavad käärid tööd tehes enese läheduses, riputasin naad keti otsa. Ongi kuidagi uhkem õmmelda. Ja praktilisem.

A necklace to keep those scissors close when needed. Why not feel pretty while sewing? And practical.

Emergency!

How often do you get the chance to design work wear for ambulance? So we took a chance with a classmate and made this our final school project. I made a jacket and pants for women and she made the same set for men. I’m not sure how much I can talk about it, because the work is still in progress so I’m just posting some pictures to show you that I haven’t just been sitting around and talk about the project more when it’s finished.

kiirabi jope 5 Kahjuks pidin tegema tooted suuruses 50C ning selles suuruses modelli mul pildistamiseks käepärast polnud, seega pole ka jope piltidel kõige paremini eksponeeritud.
Tööriiete konstruktsioon ja tehnoloogia on suuresti erinev sellest, millega koolis oleme kokkupuutunud, mistõttu veetsime kursaõega ühe kuu Kiviõlis töörõivaste tehnoloogiaga tutvudes.
Nüüd jälle kleitide ja seelikute juurde!

Sadly I had to make it a size 50C and now I didn’t have a model big enough so the jacket seems a bit baggy.
Work wear is something so different from all the skirts and jackets I’ve made so far, construction and sewing wise. I spent a month studying the technology of it in a big sewing company specializing in work wear.
Now back to skirts and dresses!

Liebster award

liebster-award1 (2) I was given the nomination of the Liebster award by Meg over at Made by Meg (I was so pleasantly surprised, thank you!) which is an award given to lesser-known (usually people with fewer than 200 followers) bloggers to show them off and spread them round (:
I haven’t discovered any underground blogs that are not well known already but as soon as I come across some inspiring blog I’ll make sure you get a piece of it.
Meanwhile check out this great blog “I give 2 hoots” that collects sewers as those who are making a positive impact on the fashion industry. What a

And now my answers to Meg’s questions:

A bit about you - where are you from and do you have a favorite local sewing store? Can I come visit? (Ok, you don't have to answer that last part.)
I’m from Estonia. We have some fabric stores and the variety of fabrics has developed but surely the assortment is better where You are (:

How do you choose your fabrics? Do you go with what catches your eye? Have something in mind when you go? Or shop for certain fabric weights or colors?
Of course I go for the fabrics that catch my eye and feel nice against the skin.. you can’t wear something that itches or makes you feel uncomfortable. Then I think through what can I make of it (but sometimes the print is just so exciting that I take enough to make a maxi dress, then I have the freedom to choose what to make afterwards). Sometimes, when I want to make something in black or white, I have the design ready before I go to the store because I can be sure I can find something that suits the design.

Are you a cautious, measure-twice-cut-once type of sewist or are you the throw-it-up-on-the-dress-form, make-it-up-as-you-go type of girl?
Every time I start a new project I’m the measure-twice-cut-once type of sewist but as the project develops I tend to become more of a throw-it-up-on-the-dress-form, make-it-up-as-you-go type of girl.

What is your favorite thing you've ever made (show me!).
I’d like to believe that my favorite thing is yet to come.. (: Otherwise I could pack my bags.

What was the most DISASTROUS thing you've ever made and why? (You don't have to, but of course we'd all like to see that as well!)
I think my first projects were all disastrous because I couldn’t sew very well and it took me so long that the excitement of the project wore off.

Do you primarily sew special garments for your wardrobe (dresses, jackets...) or do you try to make everything yourself (underwear, t-shirts...)? How's that going?
Lately I have tried to make everything myself (that I can), when I’m in stores and like a garment I always think if I can make it myself, if I can, I won't buy it. So far I’ve made coats, jackets, dresses, trousers, skirts, t-shirts and lingerie.

Would you say you've found your personal style? Or do your tastes constantly evolve so that what you made last year doesn't work for you any more? Any tips on that front?
I think I have found a way for myself but it changes slightly from time to time.. It changes more with the seasons, in winter I like darker and sparklier thing, spring is more for flowers and cute blouses, in summer I tend to like lighter colors and flowy things and autumn is for deeper colours like mustard yellows, deep reds and blues.

What decade other than now most closely inspires your (current) personal style?
I take inspiration where I can get it, so I can’t say that there is a specific decade that I like.

Have you ever sewn for others? Did they appreciate it? Did it fit?
We had school projects where we had to sew for others, so I made a jacket and a skirt for my mother and a coat, vest and trousers for my boyfriend. They had to fit well because we were under constant supervision.. I have also made dresses for others but I mostly sew for myself.

What is your day job/day-to-day life like? Are you an all-around creative or is this your artistic outlet?
Currently I’m still a student and I pass my days writing and making my thesis work.
A little sneak preview of what I'm concentrating on right now:

I know all your friends are telling you to get into the sewing business. Do you ever have aspirations to start your own handmade-related venture?
Well.. It would only be possible if you had a strong and big clientele and making collections two or more times a year isn’t that appealing to me. Lets see what the future has in store for me..

Roosajad

Feels like I’m a little girl again. I don’t remember loving pink much from my childhood but I used to dream about a sparkling pink tulle skirt. The pink I’m into now is not that intense and a bit old-looking. These are the pink fabrics that are taking space on my stuffed fabric-shelf. One day I will make something beautiful out of them, I already have some plans..

Juukselips

Lipsu kangas on sama, mis sellel voltidega pluusil, mille tõmbab kokku must sametpael. Mõned lipsud peavad olema lihtsalt igaksjuhuks võtta. Peab mõne väiksema ka tegema..

Every now and then a girl just needs a bow. This bow is made out of the same fabric as this pleated blouse and pulled together with a velvet ribbon. I guess I have to make some smaller ones too..

juukseklamber 2juukseklamber

Lipsu all on samuti sametist pael.

The clip is also covered with a velvet ribbon.
